SUPERHERO program
An ecological approach to somatics (movement education) for children
Adventure-based, child-led learning
For kids who do not thrive in a top down pedagogical framework
Specifically geared toward imagination, risk taking, creative expression and community building with other children
A space for your kid to thrive and develop their motor skills as well as proprioceptive development for specific age groups
A place for kids to express themselves as well as for parents to see what they can do in a creative community with their kids, friends and their neighbours
Studio ED is committed to disability justice; masks (N-95) are required in all our adult classes and masks are encouraged in all of our kids classes. We provide them.

BIO
Laurel Koop (they/them) is a parent to two superheroes. They are a longtime movement teacher and researcher. They are currently the director of Studio ED. Laurel has been teaching kids for over two decades and the heart of their teaching has always focused on pedagogy as a means to facilitate freedom and exploration alongside co-operation, aka liberationist community building. Laurel grew up in camps and as a camp counselor and program director. They then ran a full-scale kids summer camp at the Elora Centre for the Arts for multiple years, they were a dance teacher for the Toronto School board during this time, and then upon moving to Montreal worked as a dance teacher at Royal Vale Academy for many years as well as developing a series of movement workshops called “Resilient Bodies” for teenagers deemed “at risk” by the English Montreal School Board. The next big devotional project was parenting! Then in 2023 Laurel founded multiple programs at Studio ED including the Queer Teacher’s Collective, the Queer Lifting Club (with Nadine Forde and now with Eroca Nicols) as well as the program for kids: SUPERHERO moves.
Laurel has trained in many movement forms, most significantly in team sports, as well as ballet and contemporary dance. They graduated from Concordia University’s Contemporary Dance program. They have also done long term training and teaching in yoga, the biomechanics of movement, politicized somatics and strength training. Their most influential movement mentors include Eroca Nicols and Kelly Keenan. They have huge gratitude for their collaborators Ethan Douce, Nadine Forde, Chava Field-Green, Rae Fleury and Leanne Dyer.
