Mindfulness, big moves and support.
Come for fun and meaningful movement moments between you and your little one, along with the others in the class. Parents/caretakers will be very involved in this class, so dress ready to move with breathing, stretching, jumping, rolling and bouncing games. This will be a playful and experimental movement class revolving around cooperative play as community building.
SUPERHERO 1 4-5 ans / yrs
Using creative movement as a way to explore safety and adventure.
We will play together and I will introduce superpowers of mindfulness, big moves and cooperative games. We will practice being wild with our bodies and also finding our calm and our superhero stealth. This class will help kids practice being leaders and followers as we choreograph our way into so many fun superhero games!
SUPERHERO 2 6-8 ans / yrs
A movement class all about choice, courage and teamwork.
We will propose lots of fun and diverse skills that these superheroes can work on. The focus will be to try out lots of different movement stuff as a way to learn about what our bodies love to do, want to learn to do and how to turn these into superpowers! Body diversity will be celebrated. The whole class will revolve around a CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE. And each week there will be a new challenge for this superhero team to take on…

About me…
Hey there, I’m Laurel (she/they). I am a parent to two wild, wonderful kiddos who are 4 and 7 years old. I am the director of Studio ED, which is a dance studio and community center in the Mile End. I practice politicized somatics (community-building and wellness); I am a dancer and movement educator with over two decades of experience; I love bodies and I am endlessly curious them. What motivates me as a teacher is to create personal connections with the kids. I want to learn about the magic each of them carry inside, and to figure out where I can support the challenges they have. The Superhero program is something I have been developing since 2022. This is a program for parents who want their kids to learn about consent and about themselves in a body positive, body diverse space.
Other Teachers / Autres prof….
Maxine Segalowitz (she/elle) is a queer Jewish dance artist currently living in Tiotià:ke (Montréal), where she has immersed herself in creative communities as a dancer, choreographer, clown, drag+cabaret performer, and stand-up sleeper. Maxine’s teaching experience comes from an intricate relationship with learning, and guidance from inspiring teachers and mentors, namely Angelique Wilkie, Neil Sochowsky, Kelly Keenan, Sara Hanley, Laurel Koop, Hanna Sybille Müller, Joe de Paul, Helen Simard, and Be Heintzman Hope. Through a combination of valuing a safe learning space, attention to detail and always bringing it back to the joy of a game, Maxine strives to share in her teaching practice what has always brought her back to keep learning.
Thank yous…
The projects that I have been cooking up at Studio ED these last two years would not exist without the help of some incredible people. These are folks who have supported me, worked with me, given me feedback and who continue to teach me invaluable things. Thank you to Leanne Dyer, my original collaborator at Studio ED (I still think about Fun and Funny all the time). My ongoing collaboration with Nadine Forde has become one of the backbones of the studio. Nadine’s teaching and approach to strength training (check out Beefcake Strength: From the Ground Up and Queer Lifting Club) are so awesome, I don’t have words for how this has changed my own relationship to my body, as well as to what feels possible at the studio, I love dreaming and scheming with you. I have had amazing teaching collaborations with Chava Field-Green (the quiet comedian, thank you for coining the phrase “for kids and kids at heart”) as well as Maxine Segalowitz (master of experimentation, always bringing the energy, hyping me up when I am down). Thank you to Kelly Keenan, you have been an incredible teacher and friend and supporter, so much of my teaching style is influenced by your adventurousness and body wisdom. And lastly but not leastly I want to name my incredible Frentor (friend/family/mentor) Eroca Nicols, well the list is endless, but I wanna start by saying that you have taught me the most about unconditional love, and I would not be anywhere near where I am without that. Also, thank you so much for all of your teaching around consent as an ongoing project (not something we achieve in relationships or perfect). A lot of the language and vision that structures the studio has its roots in stuff I have learned from you about race, privilege, class and ability; in specific a lot of the language I use in describing the sliding scale and BIPOC rates comes from you.
